With the provisional approval of Birmingham Airport runway extension, several possible benefits are emerging. As reported in the Birmingham Mail, many local residents appear to support the scheme. In hard economic times the expansion will bring much needed employment to the immediate area. It is estimated that over 2000 new jobs will be created. As well as construction jobs, many service companies will also benefit. In the medium and long term many new jobs will be created as the airport embarks on its plans to become a major international hub.
Reports are also surfacing of reviving plans for a Metro rail link from the airport to the city centre. The original scheme was shelved last year; however with final approval of the scheme dependent on meeting strict environmental targets, the metro would offer a green alternative to increased car traffic .
