Birmingham is the second largest city in England, and has a population of 1,006,500 people. The area of Birmingham has seen settlement for over a thousand years but really came to prominence during the Industrial Revolution. Birmingham is now seen as an extremely important centre for British commerce, finance and business. The city is also an important area for further education, with many universities and colleges based in and around the city and area of Birmingham. Due in part to these reasons, as well as the obviously excellent transport links, the city is often considered the “second city” of England.

Birmingham International Airport is a large airport situated in the West Midlands in the affluent borough of Solihull. It is the sixth busiest airport in the UK and, after Manchester International, the second busiest not serving London. The airport first saw aircraft activity in 1939, and the running of the airport passed to the West Midland County Council in 1960. The airport has been improved and expanded upon ever since, with the airport being privatised in the early 1980s. Birmingham Airport is also an award winning airport, being voted the best airport in Europe in the 5-10 million passenger category in 2007. Future development plans are in place for Birmingham Airport, and include maintenance and building of new runways and modifications to make provision for the newer models of jets coming into service in the coming years.

The peak summer months are obviously the busiest for the airport, and the vast majority of air traffic is usually conducted through on Mondays and Fridays, due to the airport’s location on the outskirts of Corfu Town. The airport was used as a shelter during the Second World War and 1972 saw the final completion of the terminal building. The airport has been in continuous use ever since then.

Corfu

Corfu is a Greek island located in the Ionian Sea, just off the coast of Albania; in fact, it is the second largest of the Ionian Islands. Regarding governance, Corfu is part of the Corfu Prefecture, and the principal town, also called Corfu or Kerkira, has a population of 28,185. Corfu’s history is a colourful one, and the island unified with modern Greece in 1864, and has been bound to Greece ever since. The climate is a Mediterranean one, and this has no doubt been influential in Corfu becoming the popular tourist destination it is today, in addition to the clean seas and relaxing beaches.

Kerkira town is a small, pleasant town which caters well for tourists, and in fact its Old Town was named on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2007. Other areas of the island are well worth visiting too, including the resort town of Roda, which used to be a traditional fishing village but is now a self-contained and charming resort. There is a vibrant nightlife scene in Roda, however, as well as a large number of restaurants with varying cuisines. Also worth visiting is the Achilleion Palace, which has beautiful gardens and was built, as the name suggests, with Achilles as a theme. For a less cultural but fun day out, Aqualand on the island is a water park that is fun for all the family.

In short, Corfu has something to offer everyone, from history and culture to beautiful beaches and weather. Flights from Birmingham to Corfu only serve to make it easier to visit this attractive Greek island from the Midlands, and no doubt in coming years Corfu’s popularity will only increase.
