Birmingham city is the largest of the “core cities” of England, and is located in the West Midlands. Its population is around 1,006,500 people, and it is often seen as the “second city” of England. The area of the city has seen habitation since the sixth century and the city itself came to prominence during the Industrial Revolution due to its prodigious output and canals. In modern times, however, Birmingham has emerged as a centre for business, finance and commerce, as well as education and media, and is an essential part of Britain’s transport network, with the M1 and M6 motorways being very close by and the railway station at New Street having connections to all over the country.

Birmingham International Airport is a large airport located in Solihull, in the West Midlands. It is the sixth busiest airport in the UK. Although in use from around 1939, control of the airport passed to the West Midland County Council in 1960. Ever since, the airport has constantly evolved and improved, being privatised in 1983 and being voted the best airport in Europe in the 5-10 million passenger category in 2007. Future plans, including improvements to ensure the airport can deal with new aircraft such as the Airbus A380 are in the pipeline to further improve the service at Birmingham international.

Flights from Birmingham to Belfast are now very popular. The airline BMIBaby operates cheap Birmingham to Belfast flights, scheduling 18 flights a week. This has brought Belfast closer to the Midlands and these flights offer a competitive alternative to getting a ferry across.

Belfast International Airport

Belfast International is the primary airport serving Belfast, and it is the second busiest airport in Ireland after Dublin Airport. Passenger traffic has increased almost by a half since 2002, with nearly 5.3 million people travelling through the airport in 2007. The area of the airport has been utilised since 1917, when it was a Royal Flying Corps training establishment. Regular sustained civil air traffic began in 1933, and the airport saw use in the Second World War, with work at that time giving the airport the layout it has today. The Queen Mother went on to open a new terminal building in 1963, and the airport was privatised in 1994, with further growth expected in the coming years. A “master plan” was unveiled to deal with this expansion with widespread building and improvement work scheduled to be carried out.

Parking facilities at Belfast International Airport

There are 8000 parking spaces near to the terminal building, and this is the best option for parking at Belfast. Two weeks stay at this car park, pre-booked, would cost around £66 whereas if you did not book ahead it could set you back up to £98. There is an additional charge of £6 a day for any time over two weeks. There is also a short stay and pick up car park.

A bus leaves from the front of the terminal building called the Antrim Airlink, and this takes passengers to the station. From here there are connections to Belfast, as well as on to other places such as Lisburn and Derry. Taxis are operated by the International Airport Taxi Company, and are available outside the terminal. A journey to Belfast city centre should cost around £25.
