The city of Birmingham, in the West Midlands, is a large city boasting a population of around 1,006,500 people. The city is now a centre point for British finance, commerce and education and is regarded as one of the most favourable places to locate a business in the whole England. The central location of the city also means it has extremely good transport links to the rest of England, including a well linked rail station at New Street and a close proximity to major motorways; for these reasons the city is often labelled as the “second city” of England.

Serving Birmingham and the West Midlands is Birmingham International Airport. Birmingham is a big airport, the sixth busiest in the UK, and the second busiest not serving the city of London, after Manchester International airport. The airport has been in use since the early 1930s, but has existed in the guise we know see it since it passed into the control of the West Midlands County Council in 1960. The airport has excelled continually, being privatised in 1983 and its excellence was underlined in 2007 when it was voted the best airport in Europe for the 5-10 million passenger categories. There are proposals to extend the runways and to institute future improvements to the terminal buildings.

Alicante

Alicante is a historic Mediterranean port city located in the southern part of the Valencian Community. The city has a population of 322,673, and is one of the fastest growing cities in Spain, due in part to its status as an excellent tourist destination. The area of Alicante has in fact been inhabited for over 7000 years, including invasions by both Carthaginians and Romans. In more recent times, namely during the late 1950s and early 1960s, Alicante emerged as an attractive tourist destination, and this led to a boom of building and an accelerated economy. The city is also home to the University of Alicante.

First of all, it has to be noted that the gorgeous beaches and pleasant Mediterranean climate of Alicante helps immeasurably in its drive for tourism. There are a plethora of hotels, and there is almost every cuisine you can think of, from chains such as McDonalds to quiet Spanish eateries doing Spanish specialities. Due in part to the student and tourist presence, the nightlife is vibrant; with clubs, pub and nightclubs all there should you wish for a night out on the tiles! The Old Quarter of the town is a charming mix of wide boulevards and tiny side streets, and Alicante is home to some excellent museums, not least the MARQ archaeology museum and the recently renovated Museo de la Asegurada, which houses one of Spain’s key art collections. In short, the city of Alicante has something to offer any tourist, from the beach bum to the culture vulture!
