Birmingham International Airport is the principal airport serving Birmingham and the surrounding areas of Birmingham. It is located in the borough of Solihull, in the West Midlands, and is approximately 6 miles from Birmingham itself. The airport was first operational around 1939 for the RAF, and assumed the solely commercial and cargo flight activity that it does today in the early 1960s. There are plans in the pipeline to further improve and expand Birmingham, including redevelopment of the terminals, new taxiways and provisions to allow the airport to accommodate the new larger more fuel efficient jets that are now coming into service.

Frankfurt am main International Airport is located approximately 7 miles from Frankfurt city centre. It is, by quite a margin, the biggest airport in Germany in terms of passenger numbers, is the second largest in Europe and the eighth largest in the world. Opened and operational since 1936, the airport saw military use by the Luftwaffe during the Second World War and emerged as a major aviation hub in 1972 with the opening of their new passenger terminal, which is now more popularly known as Terminal 1. Terminal 2 was opened in 1994 and the train station for Frankfurt Airport was completed and ready for use in 1999. The almost contiguous Rhein-Main United States air base closed in 2005 and this large property passed into the ownership of Frankfurt Airport. Frankfurt Airport is not standing still ,however, and there are plans to extend, with a fourth runway and a new Terminal 3 some of the ideas on the drawing board.

There is an excellent parking system at Frankfurt Airport, with special options for those coming by train and to tell between business and holidaymaking passengers. It costs 117.50 Euros to park for a week or two, with extra fees on top of this standard cost for longer durations.

Frankfurt Airport is located approximately 7 miles southwest of Frankfurt city centre. Frankfurt itself is a large city with great transport links, including one of the largest railway stations in Europe, Frankfurt Central Station.
Transport Links to Frankfurt
The railway station at the airport provides direct trips to Frankfurt Central. By car or taxi, Frankfurt city centre is approximately a 15 minute journey away and a taxi should cost you approximately 25 Euros. Bus number 61 takes passengers into Frankfurt and comes every half hour, picking up outside Terminals 1 and 2.

It is also the financial and transport centre of Germany, and is a financial powerhouse when considering the whole of mainland Europe, due to the presence of the European Central Bank, the German Federal Bank, the Frankfurt Stock Exchange as well as a number of other large banks in the city.
Places to see in Frankfurt include Saint Bartholomeus’ Cathedral and the old Opera House. The Stadel Art Museum, one of the most important in Germany, is also situated in Frankfurt. The city has many football teams, including the famous Eintracht Frankfurt but also FFC and FSV Frankfurt.
