The area of Birmingham has seen habitation since the 6th century, and really came to prominence as a powerhouse during the Industrial Revolution. Birmingham is now seen as an extremely important centre for British commerce, finance and business. The city is also an important area for further education, with many universities and colleges based in and around the city and area of Birmingham.

Birmingham International Airport is a large airport situated in the West Midlands. The airport’s area is mainly contained within the borough of Solihull. It is the sixth busiest airport in the UK. The airport was first opened in the late 1930s, and the running of the airport passed to the West Midland County Council in 1960. Birmingham has continuously grown and improved ever since. Birmingham Airport is also an award winning one, and was voted the best airport in Europe in the 5-10 million passenger category in 2007. Future plans include maintenance and building of new runways and modifications to enable the airport to handle the new jets that will soon become ubiquitous on air routes around the world.

Malaga Airport

Malaga International airport is the primary airport for the Costa del Sol area of Spain. As such, the airport is an extremely busy one, and served just over 13 and a half million passengers in 2007. The airport first opened in 1919, but actually began to undertake large numbers of commercial flights from 1946. Much renovation and updating of the airport has gone on through the years, including a brand new terminal building being opened in 1991. There are future plans already underway at Malaga, with a third terminal building to be opened next year and a runway extension planned for completion in 2010.

Parking at Malaga Airport

There is a brand new parking building at Malaga airport, which has space to house about 2,500 cars, for both short and long term stays. Rates are around 15 Euros per day for long stay. There are however other parking companies, which for around 4-9 Euros per day will allow you to park your car off-site and shuttle you to the airport buildings.

Distance from Malaga and surrounding area

Malaga Airport is situated approximately 8km southwest of Malaga city, and is also within reach of many of the resorts in the Costa del Sol area. For instance, it is 5km north of Torremolinos.

Transport Links to Malaga

Malaga Airport is accessible from both the E-15 and the N-340 roads, and there are many car hire companies in the airport. By bus, many destinations in the Costa del Sol region are served, but locations in Malaga are served along route number 19, which picks up at both arrivals and departures. A train runs to the airport, but due to building work at the airport the pick up point is often moved around, so do check before you leave. A trip from the airport to Malaga should cost about 1.30 Euros. Taxis are in abundant supply outside both terminals, and note that there is a 5.50 Euro supplement to any trip to or from the airport.

Conference and Business Facilities at Malaga Airport

There is a lounge and meeting rooms at the airport that can be hired out for business or conference use. The lounge is located in terminal two.

The city of Malaga

Malaga is a medium sized Mediterranean port city in Andalusia, Spain. The city had a population of around 560,000 when measured in 2007. Renowned for being the birthplace of the famous Spanish artist Pablo Picasso, tourism has boomed on the Costa del Sol and this growth impacted on the city too. The beach is of course a draw, as is the pleasant climate, and there is a good range of bars and quality restaurants in the city. The city is also home to the University of Malaga.

There is much to see and do in the city, including some fantastic historical sites. The Moorish castles of Castillo de Gilbralfaro and Alcazaba are in the city, and are well worth a visit, if only for the great views afforded from high up in the ramparts. Picasso’s birthplace and museum are also must-sees for any art lovers, and the Catedral de Malaga, situated in the city centre, is also a beautiful place to visit. In all, Malaga is a slice of cultural sightseeing amongst the more beach-orientated resorts of the Costa del Sol.
