The city of Milan

Milan is one of the largest cities in Italy, and is located in the Lombardy region. It is the capital of the Province of Milano. The metropolitan area of Milan has a population of anything from three to almost ten million people, depending on how you define the area. Milan is, of course, renowned as an international centre for design and fashion, but is also an important global centre for finance and business.

During the middle ages, Milan emerged as an important trade centre and an important city in the Renaissance, and has endured periods of French, Spanish and Austrian control. In the 20th century, Milan was at the centre of the start of the Fascist movement, and suffered during the Second World War.

Moving on however, and as you might expect from a city as picturesque and historically important as Milan, there is much to see and do, especially for culture and art lovers. The Duomo has the largest collection of marble statues in the world, and is also home to the little Madonna, the symbol of Milan. Also, the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan holds one of Da Vinci’s most famous works, The Last Supper, made even more famous by the recent book and film The Da Vinci code<.

Milan is also home to the world famous football teams, AC Milan and Inter, who play at the San Siro stadium.
