Birmingham, considered by many to be the “second city” of England, has a population of approximately 1,006,500 and is the largest city in England outside of London. Settlement around the area of Birmingham has existed since around the 6th century, and the city really gained a reputation as an industrial powerhouse during the Industrial Revolution. It is nowadays a major site for commerce, and is regarded as a favourable place to locate a business; in fact, in recent years it was voted as the best place in England to locate a new business. The city also has excellent transport links, with Birmingham New Street Sstation and the city’s proximity to the motorway network.
Birmingham International Airport is located in the borough of Solihull, in the West Midlands. It is a relatively large airport, the sixth busiest airport in the UK and the second busiest not serving London, after Manchester. Although in some sort of use from around 1939, it passed into the West Midland County Council’s control in 1960, and has continually expanded and improved. The airport was privatised in 1983 and was voted the best airport in Europe in the 5-10 million passenger category in 2007. There are future plans for runways and to enable the airport to handle the new larger, fuel-efficient jets that are now in service, such as the Airbus A380.
Flights from Birmingham to Salzburg are now starting to be initialised, as the city is really a hidden gem of Austria. Birmingham to Salzburg flights have begun to be put on by Thomas Cook Airlines, who at the moment have only the one weekly flight, but this could obviously swell if demand dictates it.
Salzburg Airport
Salzburg Airport, also known as WA Mozart Airport, due to the composer being born in Salzburg, is the second largest airport in Austria. Owned jointly by the City of Salzburg and the state of Salzburg, the airfield first saw movements in 1910, and the airport developed from then on with a new terminal opened in 1966 and a new special terminal just for winter ski charter operations opened more recently. There are future plans in place to further improve the airport including new parking spaces.

There are many parking spaces to be found near to the terminal building. The car parks are less than a five minute walk to the terminal, and all the walkways are covered. There are season ticket and pre-paid card schemes that can offer discounts on the parking tariffs, which range according to how long your car will be there, from 3 to 13 Euros daily charge.

Salzburg Airport is located approximately three miles southwest of the centre of Salzburg, and is also just over a mile from the Austrian frontier with Germany.
Transport Links to Salzburg
To get to Salzburg Airport by train you have to go to the central Hauptbahnhof train station, and travel from there. The city bus number 2 service operates every ten minutes (every twenty on Sundays and public holidays) from the city centre to the airport, and it costs two Euros for a single ticket. There are taxi ranks outside both the train station and outside the main terminal building, from which you can get a car. From the airport to the rail station is a 15 and 20 minute drive. Finally, there are many other shuttle services offered by certain ski operators and hotels that can get you to and from the airport.

There are conference and business facilities at Salzburg Airport, in the Amadeus Terminal, Terminal 2. Also on site is the Airport hotel, which is linked to the airport by shuttle bus and this too offers business and conference facilities.
The city of Salzburg
Salzburg is the fourth largest city in Austria, and is the capital of the federal state that bears its name. The city is notable for its picturesque Alpine setting, and is, as per the name of the airport, the birthplace of the composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Settlement at Salzburg is thought to originally have been by the Celts, and the city has been at times Roman, then fortified in 1077, and nowadays is a tourist hot spot in Austria.
On this theme, there is much to see and do in Salzburg. The entire Old Town of Salzburg was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997 and is as such very charming. Beautiful buildings dot Salzburg including the cathedral and the fortress Hohensalzburg dominates the town and offers great views from its walls. Of course, the city also has the birthplace and former residence of Mozart. Tours are also run of the filming locations of the film The Sound of Music which was filmed in and around Salzburg.
History buffs might like to visit some of the buildings used by Hitler, such as the nearby Berghof. Finally, skiing is a great attraction to the area, and although there are no skiing facilities in the city itself, Salzburg acts as gateway for skiing across Austria.
