Stuttgart is in the heart of one of Germany’s biggest wine growing areas. The city offers a splendid array of parks and gardens, as well as palaces and buildings in a variety of architectural styles. The Mercedes-Benz Museum has a display of 160 vehicles ranging from the earliest models to the very latest designs. Stuttgart is renowned for its seasonal festivals, including the summer festival when the streets are beautifully illuminated with fairy lights and lanterns. There are many boat tours available on the Rive Neckar which runs through the city, and guided city tours or bicycle tours for the more independent traveller. The Planetarium has lectures and courses as well as an exhibition of cosmic art. The Neuse Schloss, a Baroque palace built in the 18th century, and the Solitude Castle, in the forests to the west of Stuttgart are both magnificent examples of the fine architecture in the city. Stuttgart is well known for its many breweries and there are plenty of bars where you can sample some local beer. Local food worth tasting includes sausages with lentils, local pretzels, gaisburger marsch which is a potato and beef stew, and maultauschen, a delicious pocket of noodle dough stuffed with bratwurst, spinach, egg and onion. For shopping there is the splendid Art Nouveau market hall, or try the Calwer Strasse behind the facades of gabled and timber houses where you can browse the leather, jewellery and fashion shops. The Stuttgart Opera House is home to performances of ballet, opera and theatre, while the International Theatre House is famous for its jazz performances. Nearly 20% of Stuttgart is under landscape protection and the ‘green-U’ includes parks such as the Rosenstein Park, Liebfriedschen Garden and Wartberg, creating an 8 kilometre long green space and a great area to explore or just relax
