Birmingham Airport and Birmingham
Birmingham International Airport, situated about 6 miles southeast of the city of Birmingham is currently the 6th busiest airport in Britain and the second busiest British airport not located in London. It handles nearly 10 million customers each year travelling to destinations worldwide. It started off as a small airport in 1939 which was requisitioned by the Air Ministry and used as a base by the Royal Air Force in the Second World War. Since then it has grown and grown with increased numbers of commercial flights and passengers. Birmingham city, not far from the airport, had similarly small beginnings as a 6th century farming village before rapidly expanding as it became an industrial capital in the mid-18th century onwards. Today, however, it is a commercial and cultural centre housing numerous museums and galleries.
Dubai Airport
Dubai International Airport is situated in the largest city within the United Arab Emirates and has become a major aviation hub serving the Middle East. It is the most popular and biggest airport in the city of Dubai and is used by several millions of passengers each year. In 2007, the airport served over 34 million travellers making it the world’s 27th busiest airport. In the last ten years, the number of passengers using Dubai International has more than tripled in no small part due to the increasing popularity of Dubai as a tourist destination and the massive refurbishments and expansions done on the airport. Further extensions are also planned so that by 2017 the airport will be able to deal with 70 million passengers.
Parking Facilities in and around Dubai Airport
The parking facilities at Dubai International Airport cater to both short and long stay passengers, as well as providing areas for people to park for speedy pick ups and drop offs. Car park A, located onsite at the airport, is ideal for short term parking whereas car park B is designed for longer stays. The rates are fairly steep for staying just a few hours, but the long stay rates are relatively reasonable.
Airport Distance from Dubai Town and other Notable Surrounding Locations
Dubai International is conveniently located close to various places of interest and popular destinations. The airport is situated just a few miles east of the centre of the city of Dubai. It is surrounded by built up areas including the industrial centre which lies a few miles northeast of the airport. The airport is approximately 5 miles from the Persian Gulf and the various resorts by the sea can be easily and quickly reached by using the major roads leading up and down the coast. The University of Sharjah is roughly 6 miles northeast of the airport.
Transport Links to Dubai
Dubai Airport is relatively easy to reach via a number of route and public transport. The Airport Road runs from Dubai city centre to the airport and is a quick and simple route between the two. The airport and Airport Road are both clearly signposted on the major roads in the surrounding area. There are also bus services that run to the centre of Dubai and these operate frequently. There are also bus routes to many of the hotels in Dubai. Outside the terminal entrance there are usually several taxis waiting that can take passengers to various destinations in the region.
Conference and other Business Facilities at Dubai Airport
Dubai Airport has many business and conference facilities available for passengers to take advantage of. Past check in and the security checks in the departures lounge there are several executive lounges which provide workstations and internet access in a calm atmosphere. Some of these are reserved for first and business class passengers whereas some others can be booked in advance. There are some meeting rooms available for hire by Terminal 2. There are also conference areas and meeting rooms in the Dubai International Hotel and other centres very close to the airport terminal.
